6 Day Race On The Track In Erkrath

And? Are you satisfied?
....I shake my head.
What?!? You aren't satisfied?!?
....Again I shake my head, this time stronger and more clearly.
No I did not shake my head because I am not satisfied! No! But because I am so moved my eyes have filled with tears and I cannot speak. I shook my head because I could not answer. Not yet. The memories of the runners last few laps around the cinder track at Erkrath were too moving. How proudly they ran, joking with each other or in silent gratitude, carrying their national flags on the lap of honour.
Yes I was satisfied! I was happy! I was touched!

Everything worked so perfectly. The preparation which gradually became more and more stressful as the race drew near. The start and with it the relief that it's actually under way. The first day with all its usual teething problems. Where is…? Can you…? How does…? Have you…? Do you know…? The runners, the helpers, the media, the sponsors, the public — nothing could have been better. Yes I was satisfied! And I still am. A six day race couldn't finish better.

Two weeks have gone by now and life is just about back to normal. All the formalities are completed. The report for the DLV, the record forms for the IAU and DUV have been completed. Now the preparations for next years race can start. And my thoughts of the last race, the first of it's type in Germany with it"s great participants and, in view of the tropical temperatures, great results must be written down. What a wonderful 6 days we experienced! Everyone - organisers, helpers, runners, sponsors, yes even the spectators were part of and impressed by the atmosphere that grew in the stadium. Of course it was a competition with runners ambitions for records. Everyone had entered to win against him/herself and more importantly against the others. Nevertheless there was a great feeling of fairness on and around the track. Runners helped each other through difficult periods and no-one wanted to take advantage through the weakness or problems of another runner. Helpers helped each other and made sure that not only their own athletes was well looked after. Exciting leader board battles and quiet inner battles - everything happened in those 6 days in Erkrath.
I was too hot to try to break a world record - this was realise early on. It was actually already obvious by the second day. However no-one let it get them down. Runners and helpers made new plans and kept the momentum going. More and more media became interested in the race. All the local regional newspapers, the TAZ, BILD, WDR3, ARD, 2DF, RTL, Radio Neandertal, AntenneDusseldorf,WDR2 Radio, WDRS Radio, they all came and gave the athletes the attention they deserved.

Now I just need to congratulate the winners! Achim Heukemes and my wife Cornelia (Conny) Bullig. I would also like to congratulate all the other runners for their great personal efforts. None of the 26 runners from 10 different countries who started the race had to drop out. They all have special thanks to the many helpers and the organisation. I would like to thank all of those at SC Unterbach for understanding my dream, for accepting it and making it a reality.

Yes I am happy and satisfied.
