Houston Ultra Event Weekend
Bear Creak Park, Houston TX 2/25/05 - 2/27/05
Main loop = 2.008 miles with smaller loop for last hour; both certified
Saturday again this year was the problem with light to moderate
rain all day, reaching very heavy levels around 12 AM Sunday before
improving. Moderate temperatures and low winds kept things tolerable.
We had the smallest field ever for the 48-Hour, and three of the
six exited early. Mark Fraser notched the victory with Heather Kick
taking the women's division. The conditions did not seem to deter
Sandy Powell, who powered her way to an un-pressed overall victory
and course record in the 24-Hour. The men's race was closer with
Brad Smythe eking out a one lap victory over Glen Turner. An impressive
six of nine starters in the 24-Hour surpassed 100 miles. For the
third year in a row, Colorado sent speed to our 100-Kilometer. Karen
Scott ran an impressive 8:22:14. Two noteworthy firsts for this
year's race were that Henri Girault did not arrive from France for
his annual tour of Bear Creek in the 100-K, and Ryan Loehding did
not return to defend his three straight victories in the 12-Hour.
Nicholas Meza filled in for Ryan by taking the 12-Hour handily.
Carlos Ibarra did return this year to take advantage of Sunday's
excellent weather to run a very fine 6-Hour, setting a new course
record. Great credit must be given to Joe Sellers, who took over
as RD on short notice, and ran a flawless operation.
