YUKON ARCTIC ULTRA
Newsletter
April 4th, 2005
Hello everyone,
it’s about time for another newsletter.
New contact details for the GREAT OUTDOORS
My company, the GREAT OUTDOORS, which puts on the YAU has moved
from Munich to Mittenwald. For those of you who don’t know
where that is, it’s at the border between Germany and Austria,
not far away from Garmisch-Partenkirchen. It’s in the Alps
and when I look out my windows I can see the beautiful Karwendel
Mountains. Now I just need to find the time to get out there …
Please find my new contact details at the bottom of this page.
YAU 2006 will start on Feb. 11th
Next year's race will start in Whitehorse once again. The date
for the start is Feb. 11th, the same day the Quest mushers start
from Fairbanks, USA.
YAU 2006 now open for registrations
The entry fees for the marathon, 100 and 300 miles are the same
as they were this year. However, from now on the entry fee will
include the USARA single event membership and insurance. For more
information on that insurance please have a look at www.usara.com/membership.aspx.
Also, the entry will include a video documentary powered by Yukon
Images (www.yukonimages.com).
All entrants from now on have to make an immediate first payment
of EUR 150. We have made this change because there were a lot of
last minute cancellations for 2005. If you decide to withdraw at
any point, the EUR 150 are our administration fee and will not be
refunded. Apart from that we also have rules for cancellations once
certain deadlines are past. This information is available on our
Application & Waiver forms.
Online registration and payment through www.eventrate.com are available
now. Should you have any question or problems please do not hesitate
to contact me at info@thegreatoutdoors.de.
Canadian athletes please, contact Shelley Gellatly regarding entry
fees and details (train@internorth.com).
Dawson City it is!
Yes, it is true. We will offer a race all the way to Dawson City
next year. Together with the extra 6 miles due to our loop for the
marathon that is a distance of 472 miles. I am currently working
out the details. Already now I can say that in order to go all the
way to Dawson, athletes will have to be very experienced. We will
likely only accept entries from athletes who have completed the
300 mile distance or an equally long distance in a similar race.
Other possibilities to qualify would be to have extensive cold weather
experience from extreme mountain climbing, expeditions, etc.
After Pelly Farms the scenery becomes even more remote. There is
no road access and the Quest checkpoints are far apart. We will
have additional checkpoints. However, these may be very simple camps
- possible even without any volunteers or staff - just a place where
you can build a fire and get warmed up.
The time limit for the race distance of 470 miles to Dawson is
13 days. That means 5 additional days of racing to do 150 more miles.
This part of the trail is very remote and there is considerable
elevation but 5 days should be sufficient, based on our experience
so far. For early entries the fee for this race is EUR 1,700. More
details for Dawson City will follow over the next few weeks.
YAU 2005 documentary
Werner is currently working on a DVD/VHS documentary of this year’s
YAU. He is a perfectionist and I know it will be a great film. If
you are interested, please contact Werner at Yukon Images directly
(info@yukonimages.com). It’s a great way to get some impressions
if you are thinking about participating in 2006!
Details for Skjoring
As you may have already noticed, we are offering a new discipline:
Skijoring. This requires some extra rules and preparations. We will
work this out over the next weeks and post it on the website. As
soon as the information is available, I will send out a quick newsflash,
too.
Race reports and photos
Matt Pain wrote a very interesting report about his 300 mile experience
this year. It is available online. Just go to the “Race Info”
section and click on “Race Reports”.
Also, this weekend I updated the photo gallery. You can now see
all pictures that Dave Milne took and I included Ralf Jacobi’s
photographs. Ralf participated in the 300 mile race. More pictures
will follow shortly.
Problems with the domain should be solved
A lot more people than I thought had problems with the arcticultra.de
website. It seems that the forwarding to a Number-Proxy has caused
the problem. Firewalls did not really like that. There is no more
forwarding now and I hope you all can enjoy the website. Any problems,
please let me know!
Best regards
